Im Januar 2021 entstand die "CE" in einer ersten Form, 500 Jahre nach der Exkommunikation Martin Luthers. Eine Anregung wollte sie nur sein. Sie ist heute aber auch Ausdruck der Hoffnung, dass auf die christliche Einheit nicht bis zum Sankt-Nimmerleinstag gewartet werden muss. Kann gemeinsames christliches Leben wirklich nur das ferne Produkt einer groß-konfessionellen Verständigung sein? Womöglich verwirklicht eine kleinformatige Ökumene der Buße und Umkehr bereits das Gott gefällige Ziel. Sie hat jedenfalls den Vorzug, dass wir ohne jede Verzögerung in sie eintreten können. Sie hat den Vorzug, dass sie da ist.
Zu großem Dank verpflichtet bin ich Herrn Kardinal Kurt Koch, dessen Forderung eines gemeinsamen Schuldbekenntnisses (in: Gelähmte Ökumene. Was jetzt noch zu tun ist, 1991) die Abfassung der CE veranlasst hat.

In January 2021, the “CE” was first drafted, 500 years after Martin Luther’s excommunication. It expresses the hope that we will not have to wait endlessly for Christian unity. Is a distant, official agreement among the major denominational players really the only way forward? Perhaps our repentance and obedience are the crucial steps toward achieving what God desires. And fortunately, we can take them today.
I am deeply indebted to Cardinal Kurt Koch, who many years ago called for a common confession of guilt and thus set the CE in motion.
May the Lord, who builds His Church, do the remaining work. Veni Creator Spiritus!
